Soaring levels of obesity raise concerns not only in the US where obesity rate currently stands at 34% but also in Europe (the UK – 23%, Spain – 17%, Germany – 15%). When endless diets and hours in the gym do not help as much as you may have expected bariatric surgery also known as weight loss surgery is considered to curb obesity.
The infographic analyses obesity in the UK, Germany, Spain, France, the US and Sweden. It presents estimation of the number of surgeries done in each country, also analyses the prevalence of gastric bypass. It also calculates how many salaries are necessary to cover the cost of gastric bypass in each surveyed country.
Interesting findings has come out of the research, for instance, although the UK is the most obese country in Europe, with the obesity rate of 23% percent, the data suggests that weight loss surgery in the UK is not as common as in the other countries. For example, in Sweden 9 surgeries are done per 1,000 obese adults, whereas in the UK this number barely reaches 1. The UK also stands out in surgery pricing which is significantly higher than in the researched states. On average it takes 5.6 months’ salary to cover the cost of gastric bypass, while in Germany 4.5 is enough and 4.6 in Sweden.
According to the statistics, the popularity of bariatric surgery is soaring. In Sweden over the last 3 years it rose by 160%. Growth rate in France and Germany stood at 120%. However, the rate in Spain decreased by 33 percent, it may be due to economic downturn at the surveyed period of time.
